Gwyn Pritchard: Epyllion solo oboe
Epyllion
(from
the Greek, meaning 'little epic') for
unaccompanied oboe is adapted from the solo oboe part of another piece entitled Kommos
for oboe, piano and string ensemble. The title of the original piece reflects
the world of classical Greek drama at its most intense, whereas an epyllion,
like this little oboe piece, is much more compressed, being a form of Greek
literature in which a complete narrative is told in a short space of time. It
was composed especially for Yu-Pei Wang to perform at the XVIII Zepernicker
Randspiele, 2011.
